Petrified wood is a fossil which is produced when tree-like plants are buried by sediment and is protected from eventual decay caused by exposure to oxygen and organisms. When groundwater flows through the sediment, it replaces the plant with calcite, pyrite, silica, or opa. As a result, the original wood is fossilized. The fossilized wood displays the preserved bark and cellular structures. Petrified wood is often used in lapidary and jewelry.
